Rail welding and thermite welding
NC Rail carries out track welding throughout Sweden and Norway, with certified welding teams and its base in Borlänge. We aluminothermically weld rail joints, repair rails and switch components with build-up welding, and grind the welds to the correct profile. Contracts include both new installations and repairs, from single joints to entire stretches of track. Welding is a craft where precision determines the lifespan of the track, and our welders work in accordance with current standards with documented results. Clients who need a welding team at short notice should contact us directly.
Thermit welding
Thermit welding, or aluminothermic welding, joins rails with liquid steel cast in a mould around the joint. The method is independent of electricity and gas supplies and therefore works just as well in a tunnel as out on the line. Our welding teams work in accordance with SS-EN 14730 and the Swedish Transport Administration's requirements, with controlled preheating and documented welding reports.
When properly carried out, thermite welding achieves the same strength as the surrounding rail. Therefore, we place just as much emphasis on preparation and post-inspection as on the casting process itself.
Repair welding and grinding
Hardfacing builds up worn rail heads, crossings and switch components so that they can remain in the track instead of being replaced. This saves both material and downtime for the client. After welding, the surface is ground to the correct profile for a smooth and quiet ride.
Rail welding is seasonally sensitive and requires the correct rail temperature. We therefore plan the work together with the client so that each weld is carried out under the right conditions.
